- Acid rain is the same rain but it is acidic in nature. It produces harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals and other infrastructures.
- Nowadays large amount of nitrogen and sulphur compounds are produced from the industries. And these compounds increase the pH value of rain water. Hence the rain water becomes acid rain.
- The emission of carbon dioxide into the air doesn’t produce that much effect since it becomes carbonic acid which is a weak acid.
- Due to this acid rain, many adverse effects are caused to the aquatic animals like fish. Since the pH factor more than 5 affects the eggs of fish and the pH factor less than 5 kills the adult fish.
- Some species of fish are destroyed and also it affects the insect life. Finally it changes the biodiversity.

- For the humans, it causes premature death and cancer. And also it damages the buildings and monuments.
- By using the calcium in wet scrubber of the coal-burning plants, we can convert the sulphur-di-oxide into calcium sulfates and later which can be removed from the scrubber. So this will reduce the release of sulphur compounds into the air.
- The emissions of nitrogen oxides from automobiles should be controlled to reduce the nitrogen compounds.
- The operators are suggested to install the pollution control equipments by emissions trading.
